The University of Humanistic Studies is an independent university located in a historical building in the centre of Utrecht. Our education and research, inspired by the worldviews and traditions of humanism, focusses on contemporary issues with a normative component, oriented to developing humane and caring societies.

Collectively, 5 chair groups offer a bachelor programme, 3 master programmes and a PhD graduate school to 650 students. Associate Professor at the Care Ethics Chair

The associate professor of Care Ethics & the Arts will be part of the Care Ethics Chair. The Care Ethics Chair is internationally recognized for its interdisciplinary approach to care ethics and its Master's degree in Care Ethics & Policy. Care ethics as a concern-driven ethics has a strong focus on the interplay between conceptual and empirical, qualitative research. The chair group consists of seven well attuned researchers, educators and scholars forming a close-knit team with adjunct instructors and researchers, both contract and Ph.D. In addition to contributing to the teaching and research of the chair, the associate professor can expect to participate in the academic and societal community through collaboration with colleagues from other departments, especially with regard to the internationalization efforts of the university, one of the key themes of the Strategic Plan for the period 2022-2026.

 

Profile: Care Ethics, Aesthetics & the Arts

To expand its leadership in the field, the department is looking for an associate professor with expertise in the intersection of care ethics, aesthetics and the arts in the context of normative societal concerns. We are searching for a dynamic and conceptually strong individual who can help expand ongoing research on care ethics, the arts and aesthetics. You initiate and collaborate with (inter)national and local colleagues on grant proposals, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, deliver lectures, contribute to the growth of care ethics and arts-based research in general. You will have the space to develop/continue developing your own portfolio of research in conjunction with collaborations with other universities and societal partners (such as art schools). You participate in teaching and research activities through those and/or other venues such as the International Care Ethics Research Consortium and the Art & Care Platform Series (co-)led by Dr. Visse. All University of Humanistic Studies faculty members engage in teaching, research and service aligned with the University’s Strategic Mission.

 

This is what you like to do:

  • Implement and, where necessary, further develop the curriculum of the Master's degree in 'Care Ethics and Policy'. This includes giving lectures, coordinating a course and supervising master's theses and Ph.D. students in collaboration with colleagues;
  • Contribute to the research agenda of the Care Ethics Chair in the context of the  University's Strategic Plan for the period 2022-2026, specifically ongoing research on the intersection of care ethics, the arts and aesthetics, also collaborating on current research studies in that area;
  • Publish (with colleagues) in international peer-reviewed scholarly journals;
  • Initiate and contribute to the acquisition of external research funding;
  • Contribute to the Internationalization efforts of the university (service);
  • Participate in national and international research networks, such as the International Care Ethics Research Consortium and the Art & Care Platform and existing collaborations with the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.

 

You recognize yourself in these qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in humanities, philosophy, theology, social sciences, health sciences, or a related field to care ethics and care theory;
  • Strong track record of care ethics research and arts-based/qualitative research and scholarship at the national or international levels, engaging in real-life social and political challenges;
  • Clear personal vision of the significance of the arts and care in relation to the major questions of our time, and how to express and develop this vision through higher education, research and societal impact;
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness related to expertise, instructional design, instructional delivery, and student engagement. Certified teaching experience at a Master’s level (BKO), and willing to complete a Senior SKO-trajectory to receive a senior teaching certificate;
  • Experience with successfully supervising graduate theses and dissertations;
  • Record of obtaining and managing external funding;
  • Fluent in English (level C1). If you don't speak Dutch, you are expected to acquire Dutch language proficiency at B2 level within two years.

Also:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the arts and aesthetics in the context of care;
  • Demonstrated skills in innovative thinking and creative problem-solving;
  • Demonstrated experience creating equitable and inclusive environments working with students and research participants to develop engaging curriculum and applied research;
  • Experience with/potential to build partnerships with community or societal organizations;
  • Interdisciplinary orientation, cooperative, flexible attitude and team player; 
  • If based abroad, willingness to reside in The Netherlands.

  • A temporary contract for 18 months with the prospect of a permanent contract; a position classified as Associate Professor level 2 under the Dutch University Job Classification System UFO (salary scale 13, Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities), step is depending on your scientific track record and experience;

  • 11 extra days off instead of the legally allotted 20 (in case of full-time employment);
